Utilisation

Utilisation is a key metric for engineering consultants. It measures how much fee-earning work each person is doing, reflecting the proportion of time spent on billable client projects. It is expected that each person will have a utilisation of 80%.

Bid work is counted as productive utilisation. Time spent preparing proposals and tenders contributes to your utilisation figures since this work directly supports winning new projects.

Overheads should be limited. While team meetings, company townhalls, and other administrative activities are necessary, they should be kept to a minimum to maximise time available for productive work.

If you don’t have any work assigned, you are expected to be actively looking for work. Reach out proactively and approach others to see if there is anything you can contribute to. Taking initiative demonstrates professionalism and helps balance workloads across the team.

If you still cannot find work after reaching out, contact your team lead. In the first instance, make sure your CV is updated and Workday training is completed. You can also help with writing project profiles for bids. If none of these options are available, talk to your team lead about technical training or other initiatives you could pursue.

Utilisation for each person and across projects is available through the PowerBI Dashboard
